MANSFIELD, Ohio - Mansfield will launch a new half marathon event over Labor Day weekend this year. The Spherion Mid-Ohio 13ER comes from a community-wide effort to draw attention to drug prevention and treatment, while putting the area on the map with the half marathon running community with a quality race experience.
For those starting their fitness journey, there will also be a 5K Fun Run included in the day.
Registration for the race is now open at www.MidOhio13er.com. Opening prices are $45 for the half marathon and $20 for the 5K and includes a race shirt. Stay connected on Facebook for promotions and ongoing event details.
Highlights of the race include a course that takes participants by special city landmarks like Kingwood Center Gardens, travels part of the Richland B&O Bike Trail, and starts and ends in the historic Carrousel District in downtown Mansfield. Many are expected to run the 13.1094 chip-timed miles through the streets and countryside of Mansfield on Saturday, September 5.
Entertainment, exhibits, local food, and activities will be available for spectators and runners alike.
Local communities from all over the region plan to involve students, schools, churches, and businesses to support the event, the message, and the participants. The event will also draw from outside the area, benefiting the community’s hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions.
According to Race Director Tim Hilterman, “We hope this race becomes a signature event for the area, drawing runners from all over the state to this high-caliber race and helping to make an impact on drug prevention for our community. If you have ever been impacted by drug addiction in any way, in your home, your school, or your office, then you need to be involved with the Spherion Mid Ohio 13ER.”
According to the race staff, each year Ohio has more drug-induced deaths than those by vehicle accidents.
Seeing a need in Richland County, a board composed of community members, local businesses, non-for-profit organizations, and foundations developed and organized The Drug Prevention Coalition. The coalition is spearheading the Spherion Mid Ohio 13er with the purpose of uniting the community through awareness and funding.
Donations and proceeds from the half marathon will be given to a grant entrusted to the Richland County Foundation. The foundation will then allocate funds back to the community through groups and organizations actively participating in drug prevention, education and treatment.
Spherion Mid Ohio, a staffing and employment agency headquartered in Ontario, Ohio, is the event’s title sponsor. The Drug Prevention Coalition Fundraisers are still looking for additional sponsors at any level and all types of volunteers are needed and invited to join the cause.
